What is Vascular Disease
Vascular disease affects the entire network of arteries and veins that carry blood and nutrients throughout the body, including those feeding the legs, kidneys, abdomen, brain and heart. Problems such as peripheral artery disease (PAD) and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) often develop silently over many years and can lead to pain, disability, non‑healing wounds, amputation or life‑threatening emergencies if not found and treated early. Vascular disease affects millions of people who often have no symptoms until they become serious emergencies.
- Vascular disease is common and underdiagnosed – more than 8 million adults (expected to increase as the population ages) have blockages in the arteries outside the heart.
- Studies show roughly 3–8% of older adults may have an AAA, and when an aneurysm ruptures, 60–80% of patients do not survive, which is why early detection and monitoring are so important.
Research Highlights
At MHIF, we focus on finding these problems earlier and treating them more safely through innovative, minimally invasive (endovascular) procedures. For someone with PAD, MHIF’s research means access to minimally invasive procedures, imaging and care pathways designed to restore circulation, relieve symptoms and reduce the risk of amputation. For a person with AAA, it means care from a team that offers both standard repairs and leading‑edge endovascular options, often through clinical trials of new stent‑grafts and complex aortic devices.
- Testing new endovascular devices and techniques protect limbs and reduce amputations for patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) and critical limb ischemia.
- Participating in clinical trials of next‑generation stent‑grafts and custom devices for complex abdominal and thoracoabdominal aneurysms.
- Developing coordinated care pathways for emergencies that have been shown to improve outcomes and reduce mortality for conditions like aortic dissection and complex aneurysms.
