As science evolves, innovation is alive and well. With the pace of advancing technology comes the opportunity and responsibility for clinical heart teams around the world to share expertise that improves care for all patients.
Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation (MHIF) is committed to lifesaving heart research and education, including support of a library of digital applications created by passionate and renowned physicians. These apps share learnings from research using advanced technologies and techniques.
The Joseph F. and Mary M. Fleischhacker Family Foundation provided funding that made this library of apps possible across heart valve and coronary artery disease. To date, five apps have more than 132,000 downloads by physicians around the world.
The first of the apps was Valve-in-Valve Aortic, created by Dr. Vinayak Bapat as part of his passion for advancing patient care and sharing expertise he has maintained since beginning his career in cardiac surgery. Dr. Bapat’s library of valvular heart disease apps has expanded to four today:
The PCI app was created by Dr. Emmanouil Brilakis and focuses on opening coronary arteries with a step-by-step approach to percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI). For complex cases involving chronic total occlusions (CTOs), the most severe, total blockages, collaborative research shared via digital platforms provides insight and learnings about treatment options and outcomes to guide the best clinical care.
The app shares clinical information with colleagues around the globe, including the steps involved in PCI-CTO, complex subgroups, complications, equipment and case videos.
