Training Professionals Across the Globe in the Latest Techniques for Cardiovascular Imaging and Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement

This spring, the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation® (MHIF) held two workshops on complex cardiovascular (CV) imaging and transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR). These conferences combined a virtual environment with interactive, hands-on physician-to-physician training.

Research physicians from MHIF’s Cardiovascular Imaging Research Center and Valve Science Center played a key role in making these opportunities possible. Through sharing the results of MHIF’s ongoing research and teaching proven techniques in these workshops, MHIF research physicians are helping to improve cardiovascular patient outcomes and quality of life for patients across the world.

Highlights of the CV imaging workshop included understanding imaging for CT, Echo, MPI, CMR, CTA and more, as well as special considerations to be made

when diagnosing coronary artery disease in women. In recent years, there has been rapid development and technologic advances in the field of cardiovascular imaging and MHIF research physicians have been influential leaders in this area. These advances are giving cardiologists more options to inform diagnoses, treatment and making less-invasive procedures, like transcatheter valve therapies, more accessible for patients. This opens options for older, more fragile patients who would not have had treatment options even a few years ago.

In the TMVR workshop, Valve Science Center team members were able to share learnings from their extensive experience with these procedures. The team conducted the very first transcatheter mitral valve replacement in the U.S. (seventh in the world) in April 2015 and conducted its 50th transcatheter mitral valve replacement case in December 2019. The team continues to have the largest worldwide experience with TMVR procedures.

As part of MHIF’s mission to create a world without heart and vascular disease, we are dedicated to sharing our research findings and learnings through professional educational experiences, and we are proud of the reach these events received. Registration for both workshops quickly filled with technologists, technicians and nurses from across the globe. Attendance for our CV event reached across 28 states and territories in the U.S., including Puerto Rico, and our TMVR event attracted attendees from 16 states in the U.S. as well nine different countries across the globe.

Research Milestone: FDA approves device used as alternative to open-heart

We are honored to celebrate the culmination of years of research that has resulted in new technologies for patients! In the few last weeks, we announced a similar research milestone with the FDA approval of the TriClip system for tricuspid regurgitation. We celebrated this important milestone with local media KSTP-TV, who spotlighted the importance of this new technology. We were proud to be a leading clinical site led by Global PI Dr. Paul Sorajja and the MHIF research team who contributed significant data to the pivotal trial.
