When women consider self-care, images of a soothing facial or massage may come to mind. Vacation scenes of sun and beach, lake and cabin might also surface, or a night out with best friends. While those options are delightful choices, another kind of self-care may be far more important: protecting the heart.

Heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer, Alzheimer’s, and respiratory diseases combined. More women than men die from heart disease each year.

Healing hearts is an important part of the mission at the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation. For over 40 years, our team has led the way for cardiovascular research and education to improve care and outcomes for patients around the world, and Heart Month is a time to remind ourselves what it means, and what it takes to keep hearts beating strong.

In summer 2023, MHIF partnered with The Power of People Leadership Institute (POPLI) to pilot the first Cardiovascular Micro-credential for high school girls. The 5-week, experiential program aimed to demystify the careers in cardiology and health, teach the girls about social drivers of heart health and gain transferable skills required for a career in health sciences.

The Nolan Family Center for Cardiovascular Health at the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation® (MHIF) aims to change the paradigm from cardiovascular disease to cardiovascular health through efforts in research and education. As part of the educational aim for the center, a one-year fellowship in cardiovascular prevention has been created to provide a robust experience to an individual interested in the field of cardiovascular prevention.
