The Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation® (MHIF) is pleased to announce that Dr. Ayman Haq has been selected to serve as its first-ever cardiovascular prevention fellow in the Nolan Family Center for Cardiovascular Health.

Dr. Haq joined MHIF July 1 after completing his three-year residency in internal medicine at Baylor University Medical Center and serving as an adjunct instructor at Texas A&M College of Medicine. He received his medical degree from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine in 2018 along with a Certificate in Medical Humanities and Bioethics. He earned his bachelor of science degrees in biology and business administration from The University of Texas — Dallas.

“We’re excited to have established our fellowship in Cardiovascular Prevention because dedicated training in cardiovascular prevention is critical for the future of health care,” said Dr. Michael Miedema, program chair for the Nolan Family Center for Cardiovascular Health. “One of the main goals of the Nolan Family Center is to improve education in cardiovascular prevention and this fellowship is the centerpiece of that mission.”

“I am very excited to join MHIF, as it is among only a handful of centers that offers dedicated training in cardiovascular prevention, leading the way in the research and clinical application of this crucial field of medicine,” said Dr. Haq.

During his residency, Dr. Haq conducted and published a variety of research on valve disease and other cardiology areas. As an MHIF cardiovascular prevention fellow, he will spend the majority of his time conducting prevention research while also spending time in the cardiovascular prevention clinic throughout the next year. Through these experiences, the fellowship offers the opportunity to develop a thorough knowledge base and expertise in:

  • Optimal methods of cardiovascular risk assessment, including coronary artery calcium scoring
  • The importance of nutrition, physical activity, and smoking cessation in cardiovascular prevention as well as optimal counseling methods to implement behavioral change
  • The diagnosis and treatment of complex lipid disorders, including familial hypercholesterolemia
  • The diagnosis and treatment of cardiometabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes
  • The diagnosis and treatment of hypertension

In addition to Dr. Miedema, faculty for the fellowship include Dr. Courtney Jordan Baechler, MHIF director for emerging science centers; Dr. Thomas Knickelbine, director of lipid research; Susan White, RDN, clinical program lead for cardiovascular health; and Gretchen Benson, RDN, program director for the Nolan Family Center for Cardiovascular Health.

We are honored to celebrate the culmination of years of research that has resulted in new technologies for patients! In the few last weeks, we announced a similar research milestone with the FDA approval of the TriClip system for tricuspid regurgitation. We celebrated this important milestone with local media KSTP-TV, who spotlighted the importance of this new technology. We were proud to be a leading clinical site led by Global PI Dr. Paul Sorajja and the MHIF research team who contributed significant data to the pivotal trial.
