How did you hear about the MHIF internship and why did you want to participate?

I have heard from previous interns that their experience as an MHIF intern solidified their decisions to go to medical school and pursue clinical research. I am excited to develop my research skills, observe the work of medical professionals, and learn more about cardiovascular health. Overall, I believe that the MHIF internship provides a unique opportunity to perform impactful clinical research while being immersed in a clinical environment.

What sparked your interest in the field of research, medicine and cardiology?

Cardiovascular health and interventions have been a common topic of conversation in my family, as several of my family members have struggled with cardiovascular disease. After watching them undergo successful surgeries and treatments, I wanted to learn more about medical interventions and patient care. Last summer, I did research on pulmonary embolisms and post-procedure bleeding complications in cardiac patients, which deepened my interest in clinical research. Lastly, my coursework has piqued my interest in global health and the prevention and treatment of women’s cardiovascular disease.

What is your desired career in medicine?

I am interested in many areas of medicine, including cardiology, oncology, and infectious diseases. Although I am unsure what specialty I want to pursue, I plan to become a physician to serve others and address health inequities in my community.

What are you most looking forward to this summer?

I am most looking forward to meeting the other interns and physicians that I will be working with! I am also excited about the observation opportunities in the CV operating room, catheterization labs, and patient care units. Since I am interested in upcoming cardiovascular interventions and medical device design, I also look forward to medical device company visits.

What do you hope to gain from this experience?

As an MHIF intern, I hope to learn more about cardiovascular healthcare and overall hospital operations. Additionally, I look forward to learning more about the clinical research process and refining my presentation skills. I hope to reaffirm my plan to pursue a career in medicine and gain insight into which types of subspecialties I am interested in.

What are your plans after the summer?

After this summer, I will return to Duke University to finish my undergraduate degree. I also plan to take the MCAT and apply to medical school in the coming years.

What is a fun fact about you?

I play clarinet in a wind symphony! I also enjoy tennis, golf, and cross-country skiing.
