Position Summary

The Assistant Controller plays a critical leadership role in MHIF’s finance operations, ensuring fiscal integrity, strategic insight, and operational excellence. This role provides essential oversight of accounting processes and financial reporting while driving efficiency, compliance, and continuous improvement in support of our life-saving mission.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee monthly close processes, journal entries, account reconciliations, and management reporting.
  • Collaborate with the CFO and department leaders on budgeting, forecasting, grant tracking, and financial modeling.
  • Partner with team to maintain accurate financial records, prepare and analyze financial statements (e.g. income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements), and generate regular reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and IRS/tax regulations. Lead annual audit and Form 990 preparation.
  • Monitor grant revenue and expenses, prepare funder reports, and ensure compliance with donor and institutional requirements.
  • Identify and implement improvements in systems, procedures, and controls.
  • Serve as a financial liaison across departments. Translate complex financial data into insights.

What Sets You Apart

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required).
  • 7+ years of progressive nonprofit accounting experience.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, fund accounting, and financial reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and communicate across levels.
  • Proficiency in Excel and accounting software (e.g., Microsoft Dynamics).
  • CPA or CMA designation (preferred).
  • Experience with Active Reporter (preferred).
