How did you hear about the MHIF internship and why did you want to participate?

I first heard about the MHIF internship two summers ago from a physician mentor, who expressed how incredible the program is and encouraged me to apply for the summer after my junior year of college. When I read more details on the MHIF website about the personalized program and exciting observation and research opportunities, I knew I had to apply. I am grateful to be able to participate in the program and cannot wait to see how much I learn and grow from the experience.

What sparked your interest in the field of research, medicine and cardiology?

I first became interested in the field of cardiology when I was in high school, after my dad had a major heart surgery. I was inspired by how the doctors and nurses modified his post-surgery plan and recommendations to fit his specific circumstances, and how encouraging his care team was. He was able to fully regain his active lifestyle with help from the physicians and nurses, to which my family will be forever grateful. I became interested in research a few years later after taking a scientific writing class, which led to my involvement in a research lab at my school and several summer research positions.

What is your desired career in medicine?

As a kinesiology major, I have been most focused on orthopedic medicine. I am looking forward to learning more about different medical fields, which could change my current aspirations.

What are you most looking forward to this summer?

I am most looking forward to working with my physician and staff mentors, as well as getting to observe fascinating cardiology procedures and surgeries. I am also excited to meet and spend time with the other interns in the program!

What do you hope to gain from this experience?

I would like to gain more insight into the scientific process through my clinical research project, since I have not yet had the opportunity to experience working on a prevention study. I am also hoping to gain a more in-depth understanding of clinical cases and areas of research in cardiology through the lunch and learn sessions and case presentations.

What are your plans after the summer?

I will be a senior at the University of Michigan this Fall. After graduation, I am planning to take a gap year to work and volunteer before hopefully starting medical school in 2026.

What is a fun fact about you?

In true Minnesotan fashion, I love downhill and cross country skiing and enjoy spending time outside year round.
