How did you hear about the MHIF internship and why did you want to participate?

One of my friends was an MHIF intern a few years ago and had an amazing experience. The internship stood out to me for its unique opportunities and the chance to work with and learn from some of Minnesota's most respected physicians.

What sparked your interest in the field of research, medicine and cardiology?

I conducted a project at the Lillehei Heart Institute a few years ago. The experience made me realize just how much research can improve patients' quality of life by providing them with more solutions, inspiring my interests in research and cardiology. Additionally, my experience volunteering at mobile clinics in rural Tennessee and even abroad has given me a firsthand view of the impact that medicine can have on families, which has motivated me to pursue a career in medicine.

What is your desired career in medicine?

I hope to pursue a career in cardiology either as a cardiologist or as a cardiothoracic surgeon. But I am of course open to all other specialties in medicine.

What are you most looking forward to this summer?

I am most looking forward to conducting groundbreaking clinical research, watching heart procedures, and observing the latest cardiovascular diagnostic devices and services.

What do you hope to gain from this experience?

I hope to become more familiar with clinical research as it's something I would like to pursue further in the future. I also hope to become more familiar with the roles and responsibilities of physicians and how they balance the research and clinical aspects of their work.

What are your plans after the summer?

After the summer, I will be returning to Emory University for my junior year. I plan on applying to medical schools next spring.

What is a fun fact about you?

I used to have three pets, two cats and a dog.

Research Milestone: FDA approves device used as alternative to open-heart

We are honored to celebrate the culmination of years of research that has resulted in new technologies for patients! In the few last weeks, we announced a similar research milestone with the FDA approval of the TriClip system for tricuspid regurgitation. We celebrated this important milestone with local media KSTP-TV, who spotlighted the importance of this new technology. We were proud to be a leading clinical site led by Global PI Dr. Paul Sorajja and the MHIF research team who contributed significant data to the pivotal trial.
