How did you hear about the MHIF internship and why did you want to participate?
I heard about the internship through a previous intern, and was urged to apply due to all the amazing opportunities this program has to offer. I wanted to participate in this internship not only because of the wonderful things I heard, but also to gain medical research experience in a field I was not familiar with.
What sparked your interest in the field of research, medicine and cardiology?
My interest in medicine and research began early, inspired by my mother who served patients as a physician in a medically underserved community. Her compassion and commitment to addressing healthcare disparities showed me the power of medicine has to create meaningful change. During my undergrad, I learned the importance of research in all fields, but especially how important it is in medicine, as new therapies can make conditions, which were once life-threatening, are now curable or manageable. Cardiology is a field where research really matters, as many cardiovascular diseases are life-threatening. I chose to partake in cardiology research, so I could be involved in research that has to potential to touch the lives of those affected by cardiovascular diseases.
What is your desired career in medicine?
A specialty which stands out to me the most is interventional cardiology, but I would like to keep my options open, as all fields of medicine have the ability to serve patients and increase their quality of life.
What are you most looking forward to this summer?
I am looking forward to exploring Minneapolis as it is my first time the city!
What do you hope to gain from this experience?
I hope to gain significant experience in medical research, learn the process of collecting data, give the data significance through statistics, and learn to present the data in meaningful way. I also hope to shadow multiple subspecialties of cardiology to increase my knowledge and understanding of the field.
What are your plans after the summer?
I plan to begin my junior year of undergrad and prepare for the MCAT!
What is a fun fact about you?
I love to play tennis!
