How did you hear about the MHIF internship and why did you want to participate?
I heard about this internship through a family member affiliated with the foundation. I reviewed the details of the internship and was instantly impressed by the range of experiences it provides. One thing that I admire about MHI is its dedication to both patient care and research. This combination is one of the main reasons why I am pursuing medicine, as I am passionate about both human connection and continued learning. I could not imagine a program that would better allow me to experience the field of cardiology in both of these fundamental aspects of medicine.
What sparked your interest in the field of research, medicine and cardiology?
I have always had a love for science classes and a natural curiosity to learn. Witnessing my parents' work in the healthcare field, I realized that medicine presents the unique opportunity to combine compassion, human interaction, and scientific investigation. These experiences led me to pursue clinical research beginning in my first year of college. Through clinical research, you can have a tangible impact on both those you personally interact with and the scientific community. I am passionate about the pursuit of knowledge and the effective distribution of these findings to patients and the general public. I love learning, especially about anatomy and physiology, and believe that I can use my investigative skills to discover more about the complexities of human health. The field of cardiology presents one of the best opportunities for public education and patient continuity, due to its relationship with lifestyle. My goal is to one day become a trustworthy physician that uses research and its applications to improve the lives of my patients.
What is your desired career in medicine?
Due to recent shadowing experiences, I am currently most interested in Pediatric Cardiology and Radiation Oncology. However, I am still open to other possibilities and look forward to interacting with new specialties this summer.
What are you most looking forward to this summer?
I am most looking forward to building professional relationships and mentorships with the physicians and staff at MHIF. I believe that learning from these individuals is the most valuable aspect of this program. I am also excited to collaborate with the other interns in my cohort and build friendships with students that have similar interests to myself!
What do you hope to gain from this experience?
I hope to gain valuable experience in conducting clinical research alongside established professionals. Taking a hands-on role in my project will give me knowledge and exposure that will guide me toward success in my future education and career. Additionally, through shadowing opportunities included in this internship, I hope to witness the effect that the research being conducted has on patient treatment. I hope to meet physicians and staff across multiple areas of cardiology and witness high-level patient care in a field that I am very interested in.
What are your plans after the summer?
Following this summer, I plan on completing my senior year at Wake Forest, after which I will begin the process of applying to medical school.
What is a fun fact about you?
I enjoy doing spin-cycle classes and hope to become an instructor one day!
