How did you hear about the MHIF internship and why did you want to participate?

I initially heard about MHIF through a previous intern. After researching the program further, I was excited to learn about all the different opportunities and research that MHIF conducts and offers to interns. Having interned at Medtronic in high school, I learned about various biomedical devices and Micra, which piqued my interest in the heart. I remember hosting presentations on basic physiology at Medtronic, and it was fascinating to learn about the various pathologies that are so prevalent in cardiology. MHIF was the natural next step in advancing my knowledge about the heart while also gaining research experience!

What sparked your interest in the field of research, medicine and cardiology?

I initially became interested in medicine in high school. My grandpa was ill in the hospital with pancreatitis when I was a freshman, and I was intrigued by the complexity of medicine. However, I was interested in coding in high school as well, and during my senior year in high school, I earned a clinical IT internship at Medtronic. After attending various training seminars in Micra devices and Deep Brain Stimulation, medicine combined with my problem-solving and scientific interests. This piqued my interest in neuroscience and cardiology. Entering college, I began to look for research, and I eventually became interested in clinical research after shadowing, as my work could have a direct impact on patients.

What is your desired career in medicine?

I aspire to be a physician in neurology, cardiology, or emergency medicine. These fields are especially appealing because they allow me to expand on my knowledge as a neurology and cardiology researcher and EMT.

What are you most looking forward to this summer?

I am looking forward to working with my PI and mentor to learn more about electrical synchrony with pacemaker devices! I hope to contribute to making a difference in patient’s lives through my work at MHIF. Additionally, I am looking forward to shadowing various cardiologists to increase my understanding of the heart and its pathologies.

What do you hope to gain from this experience?

I hope to gain more experience and training in the logistics of conducting clinical research. As I continue working on my project with pacemakers, I hope to become more experienced in reading EKGs as well.

What are your plans after the summer?

This fall, I plan to complete my honors thesis in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis during my senior year and graduate from the University of Minnesota in Spring 2022.

What is a fun fact about you?

Flying has been one of my interests ever since I was a child, and I hope to plan to earn my pilot’s license sometime in the future!

Research Milestone: FDA approves device used as alternative to open-heart

We are honored to celebrate the culmination of years of research that has resulted in new technologies for patients! In the few last weeks, we announced a similar research milestone with the FDA approval of the TriClip system for tricuspid regurgitation. We celebrated this important milestone with local media KSTP-TV, who spotlighted the importance of this new technology. We were proud to be a leading clinical site led by Global PI Dr. Paul Sorajja and the MHIF research team who contributed significant data to the pivotal trial.
