How did you hear about the MHIF internship and why did you want to participate?

I found it online while searching for clinical programs. I aspire to be a physician and want to pursue research throughout my career. The MHIF program is unique because it pairs interactive shadowing experiences with clinical research. I knew it would provide me with the full exposure of what it takes to pursue a career in the cardiovascular field.

What sparked your interest in the field of research, medicine and cardiology?

I did research during freshman year at a cardiovascular center, which encouraged me to seek more opportunities within this field of study. That experience was focused on tissue culture research, so I was interested in participating in more clinical research. I started on the general path of biology and biochemical studies, which eventually led me to shadow at an emergency room and sparked my interest in the medical field.

What is your desired career in medicine?

I have always wanted to explore the field of surgery (particularly cardiovascular or gastrointestinal), but have little experience in terms of observational opportunities. As of now, I want to continue in research whether it be clinical or more biology based.

What are you most looking forward to this summer?

I am especially looking forward to observing procedures within the hospital and taking note of doctor/patient interactions. I have never worked in a hospital this prestigious and being able to shadow physicians that specialize within the cardiovascular field is a unique experience.

What do you hope to gain from this experience?

I don’t know what I want to pursue in medical school, but the cardiovascular field has piqued my interest. I just hope to receive a well-rounded exposure to different departments in the hospital, whether percutaneous coronary intervention or with heart transplants.

What are your plans after the summer?

I am applying to medical school in the fall for the 2022 and will finish college this December. I plan to work as a scribe in the hospital or continue shadowing at the clinic I currently work at.

What is a fun fact about you?

I am a very active person and participate in cross country running, hiking, biking, and rock climbing. Although it’s mainly indoor rock-climbing, I’d love to explore the wilderness and do some natural bouldering while I’m in Minnesota.

Research Milestone: FDA approves device used as alternative to open-heart

We are honored to celebrate the culmination of years of research that has resulted in new technologies for patients! In the few last weeks, we announced a similar research milestone with the FDA approval of the TriClip system for tricuspid regurgitation. We celebrated this important milestone with local media KSTP-TV, who spotlighted the importance of this new technology. We were proud to be a leading clinical site led by Global PI Dr. Paul Sorajja and the MHIF research team who contributed significant data to the pivotal trial.
