MHIF Researchers at Transcatheter Therapeutics (TCT) Conference

October 14, 2020

Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) is the annual scientific symposium of the Cardiovascular Research Foundation (CRF) and the premier educational meeting specializing in interventional cardiovascular medicine, attracting more than 10,000 attendees from over 90 countries.

Thanks to more than 30 MHIF/MHI Physicians, Fellows and staff, MHIF is fulfilling its ongoing commitment to share the results of MHIF research. MHIF will be well represented at TCT 2020:

  • 2 late-breaking clinical trial sessions
  • 2 live cases
  • 8 podium presentations
  • 20+ virtual poster presentations

The 2020 conference has gone virtual – accessible via and free to register. In its 32nd year, the conference will feature major medical research breakthroughs and gather leading researchers and clinicians from around the world to present and discuss the latest evidence-based medicine in the field.

MHIF Highlights:

  • First outcomes from the North American COVID-19 ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction (NACMI) Registry are being presented at TCT. Outcomes show minorities represent greater than half of COVID-positive patients with heart attacks, compared to less than 10 percent in the Midwest STEMI consortium (MSC), a heart attack registry representing non-COVID patients. Data from the registry also show that COVID-positive patients with ST-Elevation had higher in-hospital mortality and stroke with longer length of hospital stay. The data are being presented as part of the virtual late-breaking clinical science session by incoming Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) president Timothy Henry, MD, on behalf of NACMI study investigators. MHIF served as the coordinating data center for NACMI and MSC. See the MHIF press release here.
  • MHIF Center for Coronary Artery Disease Live Case – A team from MHIF’s Center for Coronary Artery Disease performed a percutaneous coronary intervention of a chronic total occlusion(CTO) as a Live Case Session at TCT. Live Case Sessions are real world procedural proctoring sessions wherein physicians from all over the world can observe and learn from techniques used by highly experienced operators, while also being advised by a panel of experts on best practices and treatment strategies. During this live case, physicians attempt to reopen, stent and restore blood flow through a heavily calcified CTO (chronic 100% blockage) of the right coronary artery (one of the main blood vessels supplying the right side of the heart). They demonstrate advanced treatment techniques such as use of laser atherectomy that they need to use to open such complex blockages, that are otherwise difficult to cross and reopen with traditional devices and techniques. This live case features: Drs. Emmanouil Brilakis and M. Nicholas Burke.
  • MHIF Valve Science Center Live Case – In a live case recorded for TCT 2020, a team of MHIF researchers share a patient case involving a hybrid, open-transcatheter mitral valve-in-valve procedure. While this procedure is not commonly performed, the technologies used are commercially available and approved for this use in appropriate patients. The case was evaluated by a MHIF multidisciplinary team of physicians and it was determined the patient was not ideal for a traditional transcatheter or surgical open-heart procedure to address a diseased mitral valve. Utilizing the team’s expertise across imaging, minimally invasive surgical approaches and advanced transcatheter technologies, it was determined a hybrid approach was the only option to ensure the best outcome for this special patient case. This live case features: Vinayak Bapat, João Cavalcante, Paul Sorajja and Bassam Shukrallah.
