Job Posting: Data Architect

The Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation® (MHIF) is seeking a Data Architect to contribute to MHIF’s vision of creating a world without heart and vascular disease.  To enable MHIF’s mission, this position will play a key role in serving as a data architect and enabler, driving the MHIF Salesforce infrastructure with the backdrop of its business intelligence (BI) system.   While primary focus is on Salesforce, this valued contributor will be an integral member of the BI project team. As Data Architect you will ensure business and IS alignment as we deliver an integrated organizational approach with systems that are more interconnected, enable improved communication and offer tools for collaboration.  This is an excellent role for someone who likes building new systems in collaboration with others.  Knowing that there are a range of individuals who may intrigued by this opportunity, we are open to your joining MHIF as an employee or as a contractor. 

Following an assessment of the Salesforce progress to date, the data architect will work closely with leadership at all levels, work groups, and subject matter experts to further clarify needs and to develop and deploy necessary solutions and processes.  The position will work closely with MHIF’s IT provider (Emerson Technology) for platform management.

The data architect will oversee and lead the ongoing improvement and growth of MHIF’s use of Salesforce as we continue to develop a highly customized Salesforce CRM.  You will drive successful utilization of the CRM across the organization and ensure sustainability through ongoing maintenance and configuration required to support it.  As the Salesforce offering and MHIF as an organization continue to grow and evolve, the data architect will proactively deliver new features to bring value to MHIF.

The successful candidate will have a record of successful building new platforms and systems in organizations, with oversight of a Salesforce platform and be a skilled project manager with experience driving process improvement. The data architect is expected to work closely with other members of the Information Systems (IS) Core Team, and report to the Chief Financial Officer.

Key Responsibilities:

Salesforce Architect

  • Assess current state of the MHIF Salesforce tenant.
  • Meet with key people at MHIF to understand the Salesforce desired state.
  • Craft a plan to enhance the system with the desired functions
  • Oversee a project to implement all changes to Salesforce

Salesforce Administration

  • Support, maintain and improve MHIF’s Salesforce CRM and related Salesforce applications
  • Troubleshoot issues, provide recommendations, and implement solutions & best practices in the areas of data integrity standards, data quality and overall Salesforce system use.
  • Assist foundation staff as needed to create recurring and ad-hoc reports and queries, adjust dashboards, etc.
  • Participate in all aspects of Salesforce releases, including feature review and impact analysis, planning, designing, building, testing, deploying, supporting, and documenting
  • Maintain access, security, privacy, and confidentiality requirements

Project Management

  • Responsible for project management of information system projects. Ensure that projects proceed within the specified time frames and under the established budgets, while achieving project objectives. Manage relationships and expectations with contributors and stakeholders
  • Lead communications of project progress, keeping key stakeholders regularly informed and raising up decisions that need to be made
  • In conjunction with internal staff and external partners, be proactive to design, configure and maintain business processes within the foundation in order to meet long-term organizational needs
  • Train, inform, and support users regarding system functionality, enhancements, system configuration and best practices

Business Intelligence Tableau Administration

  • Serve as the administrator for the BI data platform by maintaining access and security and coordinating with software vendors when issues arise. While maintaining the requirements of security, privacy, and confidentiality.
  • Plan and implement regular system upgrades to enhance service continuity and user experience
  • Manage our stakeholder dashboards and reports to support fact-based decision making
  • Responsible for configuration, support, maintenance and improvement of our BI Platform, including connecting more systems as they come online.


  • Plan and implement regular system upgrades to enhance service continuity and user experience

  • Create and perform testing and validation as part of the change management process in Salesforce and integrated systems




  • BA/BS or relevant experience
  • Experience with nonprofit and fundraising organizations, designing and maintaining donor management system and processes
  • Experience working with Salesforce as a donor management system and enabler for other organizational functions
  • Proven track record of helping organizations design and deliver strategic minded data warehouse systems
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills and experience in balancing multiple priorities
  • Ability to work with others as a team and in support of a positive work culture
  • Project team leadership skills
  • Successful IS project management


  • 3+ years Salesforce architecture experience
  • Experience with complex Salesforce implementations and integrations
  • Salesforce Certified Administrator
  • Experience with cloud computing environments, including Amazon S3, EC2, and/or Azure
  • Strong database experience including working with Salesforce as a CRM
  • Prior experience with Tableau and Great Plains a plus
